SPOILERS: Review: Real West - MonkeyBrain Comics - Lyesmith

Hey, Geeks and Geekettes! It's Comic Book Wednesday, and here's our review for Real West from MonkeyBrains Comics! Writer: John Arcudi Artist: A. C. Zamudio I don't normally pick up completely unknown comics on a whim, but since I've been enthralled with Weird Westerns for the past month, I couldn't let this issue pass. The artwork works really well with this; matches the gritty feel of the story. It starts with a daughter watching one of her father's neighbors properly mark his grave. After her mother died, her father disappeared out west, with dreams of striking gold. The neighbor tells her the tragic tale of her father's death; ran down by Comanches, even though he took many out with him, they still overpowered him. He fought to the very end, staying alive in the hot sun long enough to tell his friend the manner in which he died. The daughter thanks him for all his kindness, and leaves. Another local, having over heard the discussion, waited until they w

Alright, Geeks and Geekettes, it's Comic Book Wednesday and that means comic reviews! Today we've got two reviews, the new Infinity - Heist tie-in and the long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy #6! As always, be sure to check out our Facebook Fanpage at www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast and follow us on Twitter @Geekin_Podcast for all the coolest news, pictures, freebies and assorted geekery! Now on to the reviews! Writer: Frank Tieri Artist: Barrionuevo Infinity Heist was an interesting story. It follows Blizzard and Whirlwind, two c-list villains, on their adventure trying to take advantage of the Avengers being in space. It's a fun story! They're bumbling idiots who just can't catch a break. They break into the Wakanda Bank to steal supposed diamonds and gold, but Spymaster has beat them to it. He waits in an empty vault, offering to let them in on an even bigger score... What this comic does to irritate the crap out of me, is changes artist style in the middle of the

SPOILERS: Review: Batman 23.4 - Joker's Daughter - Villains Month - Lyesmith

Happy Mid-Week-Mini-Christmas, Geeks and Geekettes! It's another Comic Book Wednesday and today we're going to look at Joker's Daughter in Batman #23.4, another installment of Villains Month. As always, check out our Facebook Fanpage at www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast and follow us on Twitter @Geekin_Podcast for all kinds of news, pictures, freebies and assorted geekery! Now on to the review! Batman 23.4 Villains Month - Joker's Daughter Writer: Ann Nocenti Artist: Georges Jeanty So, I was kind of excited for this, because I really wanted to see where they were going with it. We've seen the sketches for months now. I expected it to be weird, but not this weird. First of all, this isn't actually Joker's daughter, which wildly disappointed me. I mean, we find that out pretty damn quick. I was hoping they'd drag it out, really let us think this might be his kid, let the nerd rage boil a bit; but no such luck. The girl, who much later in the book you find out

SPOILERS: Review: Buzzkill#1/Kiss Me, Satan#1 Dark Horse - Lyesmith

Image
This week really surprised me with how many great comics started up. My two favorites have to come out of Dark Horse. I won't do many spoilers here, but I wanted the warning up, just in case. Buzzkill was the first surprise of the day. While this style of art usually turns me off to a comic, it's just not my favorite style, it fit with the story really well. And I loved their flash back scenes, taking on a more classic-comic book feel with the little dots. I'm sure those have a technical name and I just don't know it. Buzzkill is an interesting concept; a former superhero, trying to get back on his feet after doing something tragic as a hero. We may have seen that a time or two before, sure, but this hero? He gets his super powers from booze. Yeah. He's Joe Blow until he gets tanked. Then he hits like a tank. It's amusing and light, despite the protagonist (the only name we're given is Ruben, and we're lead to believe that's an alias) going through s

SPOILERS: Review: Aphrodite IX #5 - Lyesmith

Aphrodite IX # 5 from Top Cow Writer: Matt Hawkins (@TopCowMatt) Cover & Art: Stjepan Sejic (@stjepansejic) I want to start off by saying this is another one of my gushing reviews for Top Cow. I love this character, I love this series, and I know you guys have to get tired of hearing me say it, but I love Top Cow comics. I'd like to take a second and say that you can read the first issue of Aphrodite IX for FREE. You can get it from the Top Cow website right here. (http://topcow.com/moos/43-latest-moos/751-aphrodite-ix-1-read-now) One more thing before we get to the review. Aphrodite IX writer and creator Matt Hawkins (@TopCowMatt) is going to be coming to a local comic book and gaming convention in Tulsa, Ok, which I intend to be at. I /hope/ to be able to grab Matt's hear for a moment to ask him three or four questions for the blog. If there anything you'd like asked, please drop a comment here, let us know on twitter (#Geekin_Podcast) or on the facebook fanpage (www.

SPOILERS: Review: Avengers #19/Infinity TieIn - X-Men #5/BotA TieIn - Lyesmith

Image
Happy Mid-Week-Mini-Christmas, Geeks and Geekettes! Today we'll be touching on the two big events in the Marvel camp. Of all the Infinity Tie Ins, I felt Avengers #19 seemed the most important, the one that moved the story forward the most, so that's what we'll be focusing on. [caption id="attachment_284" align="aligncenter" width="240"] Ex Nihila needs to take a sensitivity seminar and attend a workshop on sexual harassment in the workplace![/caption] As Carol Danvers is interrogated by the Builders (and their pet Ex Nihila, who I feel gets a little handsy with Carol - was that just me? Some of those scenes seemed to have a mite-bit of inappropriate touching going on on Ex Nihila's part. But Carol seems to ignore it.) Captain America and Thor approaches the Galactic War Council (which includes The Skrull, The Shi'ar, The Kree, The Negative Zone, The Brood, and the Spartoi) in an effort to pool resources and find a way to stop the Buil

SPOILERS: Review: Justice League 23.2 - Lyesmith

It's that time again, Geeks and Geekettes!  It's Mid-Week-Mini-Christmas! Comic Book Wednesday! We're going to continue coverage on an Infinity Tie-In and another Villains Month issue! Don't forget to go 'Like' us at our Facebook page www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast for more info, news, pictures, freebies and assorted geekery from around the Internet!   At first I was going to do Aquaman 23.1 and tell the tale of Black Manta's break from prison and the lead-up that has potential to change the dynamic of Black Manta forever. But then I saw Green Lantern 23.2, and I thought I could comment on the appearance of Mongul back into the New 52, the touches on his origin, and my own comparisons to him and Thanos from Marvel. "FRAG IT ALL!" I said! "I can't do a review on these BASTICHES when there's a new comic out about DA MAIN MAN himself!"   [caption id="attachment_278" align="aligncenter" width="590"] Lobo

SPOILERS: Review: X-Men BotA #1 & Infinity #2 - Lyesmith

Image
Just like with the DC reviews earlier, this week I'll be reviewing two Marvel comics. These focus one the two big events going on in Marvel right now; X-Men: Battle of the Atom #1 and Infinity #2. I love nothing but good things to say about Battle of the Atom. It had some moments that made me grin and made me realize how much I'm ready for all this crap to be over with and for the family to patch things up again. Kitty takes the original X-Kiddos out on a routine new-mutant sighting. Things don't go exactly as planned and Scott and his X-Men show up just in time to back up Kitty's group. I loved it. Kitty and Scott don't picker. They don't make snotty comments. They just get shit under control. It was actually pretty heart warming. As a converted Cyclops fan, this issue made my heart stop for a moment. But over all sets us up for a pretty cool little event. Though it does leave me wondering how the hell they're going to explain it. Seems ALL the X-Men are do

SPOILERS: Review: Batman #23 and JLD #23 - Villains Month! - Lyesmith

Happy Mid-Week-Mini-Christmas Geeks! It's that time again! Comic Book Wednesday! Today I'll do a couple of each DC and Marvel. This is pretty exciting for me, as it's VILLAINS MONTH! A month where the titles stop their regularly scheduled programing to give you an issue focused on a villain related to the title. Is it a gimmick? Hell yes. And I love a good gimmick! First up we've got Justice League Dark #23.1 - The Creeper! I'm super-excited about this one because The Creeper has always been one of my favorite DC characters and I really don't think he gets enough page-time. He's a great character that I think deserves more love and attention. The origins of the Pre-52 Creeper were originally linked to the Joker and his serum; though that was later retconned. And now they're styling him after a Oni Demon was Japanese myth. This is an origin story set up for The Creeper and if things go they way I hope they do we'll be seeing a lot more of our eerie fr
