SPOILERS: Review: Black Science #1

Image
Hey, Geeks and Geekettes! Here's another science-meets-fantasy review. Maybe I'm in a mood this week. Black Science #1 comes to us from Image Comics Writer: Rick Remender Artist: Matteo Scalera I wasn't sure about this book till the end. It did keep me entertained the entire time, but it seemed so dark. I wasn't sure this was one I'd want to revisit. The art was great, this strange world that we're immediately thrown into instantly pops. We follow Grant Ward, apparently a scientist, as he rushes to get back to his children and return them home. As the book progresses we find that Ward found a way to move between dimensions. He's troubled by how his obsession has ruined his marriage and personal life, but the only thing that matters to him now is getting is family home safely. He's chased by murderous fish-people into a temple occupied by electric-tongued frog people.  I won't ruin too much of the story, but it's got a ver

Hey, Geeks and Geekettes! It's Mid-Week Mini-Christmas, also known as Comic Book Wednesday! Today we're gonna do Aphrodite IX #6, but stay tuned for Black Science #1 coming up next! Now then... On the to review! Writer: Matt Hawkins Artist: Stjepan Sejic Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a pretty big Top Cow fan, and a pretty big Aphrodite IX fan. Hawkins and Sejic's relaunch of the title has not disappointed and as we flow into the next story arc they turn up the notch just a little. I've done a review on this book before, but with the new story arc starting, I felt it necessary to do a follow-up. I'm excited for this book; we've gotten the set-up out of the way, we know who we're dealing with and what she's looking for. "Now we get down to the tacks and the brass." Aphrodite IX is being hunted by Gen mercenaries, whom in true Stjepan Sejic fashion are looking pretty bad ass, when she's also discovered by a grou

SPOILERS: Review: Manifest Destiny # 1

MANIFEST DESTINY #1 Written by Chris Dingess Art by Matthew Roberts Published by Image Comics (November 13, 2013) Manifest Destiny is a fantasy retelling of the Lewis and Clark Expedition into the American West. Writer Chris Dingess springboards his story off of an actual historic oddity: President Thomas Jefferson believed that a real possibility existed that Lewis and Clark would come across prehistoric beasts and lost tribes of mythological people. Sadly, that proved not to be the case; the expedition merely encountered countless aboriginal tribes, all of whom were informed they were now American citizens to be ruled by the Great Father in Washington DC. But in Dingess’ alternative tale, monsters do indeed exist in the dark unexplored reaches of the newly purchased American West. We quickly discover that the true purpose of the Lewis and Clark expedition is not so much to explore the Louisiana Purchase, as much as it is to seek out and remove supernatural creatures fro

Voice in the Dark #1 By  Larime Taylor www.facebook.com/larime.taylor @TopCow                            As a big fan of Top Cow and their crew, I've been seeing this comic advertised for weeks now. I'm not sure what I was expecting out of this comic, but I ended up pleasantly surprised. If I had to liken it to other piece of work, I think I would say it's a little Dexter and a little A Scanner Darkly . Now I say A Scanner Darkly to use as an example in tone. I could easily see this in the same format, kind of a moving graphic novel movie, but that's still not where it compares for me. How can I put this... most times when I read comics, there's a background noise. Kind of like a soundtrack. A constant buzz of sound. What Taylor did here was give us a story where the only background noise was the main character's narration.                               Where it compares to Dexter is that the main character seems to be struggling

Harley Quinn #0 Writers: Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti                                           Artist: Charlie Adlard, Art Baltazar, Becky Cloonan, Darwyn Cooke, Tony S. Daniel, Sam Kieth, Bruce Timm, Jim Lee, Stephane Roux, Tradd Moore, Chad Hardin, Adam Hughes, Dave Johnson, Dan Panosian, Jeremy Roberts, and Walter Simonson INSANELY WACKY! This is probably one the best ways to introduce a new book with a character this crazy. Each artist gets at least a page and it was wonderfully done. Harley talks with the writers about her book, who should draw it, the tone and subject matter.  There's not a whole lot to say about the story, because there really isn't one, except that you some awesome art from some of the most talented artists around, and a couple of cameos to boot. If you're a Harley Quinn fan, I think this comic is for you. Very fun. One I'll be going back over several times before putting it away. As always, visit u

SPOILERS: Review: Uncanny X-Men 14

Welcome to another mid-week Mini Christmas, also called by it's lesser known title, Comic Book Wednesday. Today we'll be reviewing UNcanny X-Men #14. Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Chris Bachalo                   I think I have a new favorite gay comic book character. For the first time in a long time, I've found a character who just HAPPENS to be gay. It's not his entire identity. They didn't make a big fanfare about it. In fact, even in the book, the response to the character's declarative over his sexuality is "I don't care. What does this have to do with this?" Emma Frost , I love you all over again. Mr. Benjamin Deeds , I adore you as well, sir. I am excited to learn more about this guy, I am excited to see more from him, and I love this book. Bendis handled this BEAUTIFULLY. Bendis handled this the way the vast majority of gay characters SHOULD be handled. THANK YOU, SIR.                      I have a problem wi

Why I Love Loki And Hate His Fans - Lyesmith

Image
Loki is the epitome of duality. He's creator AND destroyer. He's a father AND a mother. He's male AND female. He's good AND evil. To the core. While Loki is definitely modeled after humanity, he can never be held to human rules and logistics. He's a god. He's an idea. An archtype. While he has human characteristic, he also has ALL human characteristics. He's much more than any one person could ever actually be. He fathered and gave birth. He had children he loved and cared about. He also cheated on his wife. Stole. Lied. Played cruel and merciless tricks on people. He cut off all of Sif's hair; her prized possession, because he thought it would be funny. Sure, he took one for the team, and turned into a mare to lead away a workhorse of a giant, to keep that giant from winning a bargain Loki struck with him. So, again, cheating and lying, to get out of a mess HE created. And someone suggested he was raped by the horse. I see no evidence anywhere

SPOILERS: Review: Injustice Annual #1/Constantine #8

Hey, Geek and Geekettes! It's time for the DC side of Mid-Week Mini-Christmas, also known as Comic Book Wednesday! Let's dive into those reviews! Constantine #8 Writer: Ray Fawkes Artist: ACO This ending of this book irritated by crap out of me. But we'll get to that. I love the storyline they've got going for Constantine, and I wish they'd leave it kind of separate, on the side, not really tie in the direct story to anything else. The artwork isn't my favorite this issue, but I think it fits with the story, so it works. The story picks up where the last one left off, which is the way I like it. Constantine fighting with Mr. E while Sargon looks on, unable to stop Mr. E, but neither is she willing to help Constantine - at least not directly. She leaves a sword called the Moonblade where Constantine can get to it, giving him the edge he needs to defeat Mr. E. Drained (and I bet, unable to see a way out out of his current situation without a confrontation, and als

Hello, geeks and geekettes! It's that time again! Mid-Week Mini Christmas, also known as Comic Book Wednesday! This week we're doing All-New X-Men #18 and Thor God of Thunder #15 on the Marvel side. Speaking of Thor, check the facebook page at facebook.com/geekinpodcast for our first issue of the Geekin' Podcast and Retinax5's and I's review of Thor: The Dark World! Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Stuart Immonen I must be a bigger Bendis fan than I thought. I notoriously love Guardians of the Galaxy, and I'm just as much in love with this book. I thought the art worked very well for the story, and the over-all book was exactly what I want from my X-Men books. This book addressed things that I'd been wondering about for several issues now - the Jean/Hank kiss. The fact that Magick and Kitty used to be so close. The future of the young original X-Men. The original X-Men are trapped in our time - they can't go back. At all. People have tried. Something

Amazing X-Men #1 - The Quest for Nightcrawler Writer: Jason Aaron Artist: Ed McGuinness Nightcrawler has always been one of my favorite characters since I was a child. I was saddened when he died, but anyone who's ever read more than 6 issues of X-Men, we knew he'd be back eventually. And Amazing X-Men #1 is where that happens. Nightcrawler is in Heaven, but it's just short of paradise for Kurt. He was a flirtatious swashbuckler, a man of faith and belief, and now he sits in Heaven twiddling his thumbs. He's not ready for eternal rest. He has more to do, so he feels. What he really feels, is bored. Until Dad shows up for a visit. One of Marvel's most interesting and underused villains, Azazel, attacks Heaven. Meanwhile, on the mortal coil, Angelica Jones, Firestar, shows up at the Jean Grey School as their new teacher. Nervous, anxious, and unsure of what to expect, Angelica's met with the usual chaos and disorder that follows Wolverine's X-Men where ever th

SPOILERS: Review: Stormwatch25/Phantom Stranger13

Hey there, Geeks and Geekettes! Welcome to another Comic Book Wednesday which means, of course, comic reviews! We'll start the week off with DC Comics Phantom Stranger #13 and Stormwatch #25. Writer: J.M. DeMatteis Artist: Fernando Blanco Phantom Stranger is a part of the more "magic centered" side of DC Comics, along with Justice League Dark, it has more of a Vertigo feel to it, but this time around, with the New 52 reboot, they're grounding this side of the DCU in more connection with everything else. It doesn't feel so disconnected as it did before. Phantom Stranger is a fun and... strange comic. It has heavy religious tones, as we're lead to believe that the Phantom Stranger used to be Judas, the very same who betrayed Christ and is now kept alive to do God's bidding in some undefined penance. This issue we find the Stranger in the house he's used for his alter ego and mortal guide, Philip Stark. Philip Stark was a real man - a serial killer, whom

Getting back into role-playing recently myself, I've decided to help my older children roll up 3.5 D&D characters. They're ages 9, 7, and 5. This may seem a little young on the bottom end there, but here's my reasoning on this. I've started role-playing again with a group every weekend. My 7 year old son has expressed an interest and been asking lots of questions. I was 8 when I started playing. My Mom worked at my Uncle's comic shop, and they hosted games at our house on the weekends for as long as I could remember. Finally, after months and months of BEGGING, they let me start gaming with them. I couldn't stay up past my bedtime, one of my "uncles" (read: friend of the family. I had more uncles from that comic shop than any one kid should ever have uncles.) would take over my character. Okay, that's half a lie. I'd usually get myself killed well before then. They didn't hold back on me, and while it might have been disappointing in th
