Weird West Week - Comics

Welcome Geeks and Geekettes to Weird West Week! Because of my rabid love of comic books, I think we'll start there. Some of these series I've read, some I haven't. I'll do small reviews for the ones I have read/am reading, and at least synopsis on the rest. Jonah Hex Jonah's gone through few changes over the last decade. Civil War vet turned mercenary, Jonah Hex is rough, gruff, and crude. He's a tell-it-like-it-is, no frills, meats and potatoes kinda guy. He's also one of the best shootists in the West. In a genius move by DC, they brought Hex into the New 52 in a comic called All-Star Western. If you haven't picked it up, you need to. Hex has gone through the early history of Gotham City and worked with ancestors of the Wayne and Arkham family. So is that Chewbacca on that cover or the Big Foot that wrestled the Six Million Dollar Man back in the 1970s?? Star Wars #3 continues the nostalgia filled goodness of Marvel’s original Star Wars run. Thomas’ script is solid and sticks close to the film script. Chaykin’s art (except for Chewbacca) is strong. I know; not much of a review. But this isn’t Mozart here folks; it’s breezy 70′s comics fun and i’m loving every minute of it… …Unlike the following… My God, why can’t the actual comic be as wonderful as these covers?!?! Those Francesco Francavilla covers are just beautiful!! Alas, the comic is anything but… I really dig Dark Shadows. I discovered the show by way of the 1991 mini-series (which i absolutely adore). Several years later, the original series turned up ...

Welcome to the first edition of the Daily Read. Essentially, this feature will be a series of mini-reviews of what comic books I've read that day. Nothing to detailed; just a few sentences. The number of comics per day will vary. Today I have only two, but they are good. So let's dive in. Star Wars #1 Yes, i began the day by going old school. I'm a Star Wars fan. Nothing major. I don't have Jedi listed as my official religion and i've never beat a man to death with a vintage Gamorrean action figure for saying Star Trek was better. I just grew up watching the movies. In fact, Return of the Jedi was the first movie I saw in a movie theater. Unfortunately, I don't follow the Star Wars comics. I've heard that Dark Horse has done a great job with the license, but I've just missed them. But i do recall reading the old Marvel comics. Not when they were published; i'm not that old. But i did pick up a handful of nasty yellow-pagedStar Wars comics at a yard s...
