TDKR sucked.

Image
Okay, it didn't totally, completely, black-hole SUCKED, but it fell flat for me. The DVD is out, so I'm not going to worry about spoiling anything, but just in case you haven't seen it yet, I'm about to ruin the WHOLE MOVIE. Bane and Talia were lackluster villains compared to The Joker. Catwoman could've had SO much more done with her, though I do feel there were small nods to a possible Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy tie-in. And I hate the way it ended. Batman gets to go off and live happily ever after? And he's okay with that? Set someone else up to take his place and he can just run off to Florence with Selena? What did I miss there? I'd have felt better if Batman DIED than to have him live happily ever after. I will say, Anne Hathaway shocked me. She was awesome. And it was a rougher, edgier side to Joseph Gorden-Levitt than I've ever seen. I also loved the that Ra's showed up for a split second, and you got Dr. Crane's cameo. Really tied it all

Prometheus (2012)

Image
Prometheus is a film that wants very much to be more than a horror film. Sir Ridley Scott, who crafted the 1979 film Alien (from which this film is inspired), has grown as an artist in the last quarter century. It is therefore understandable then, when revisiting the universe of Alien , he would want to do more than simply make another “haunted house in space” film.  And that is the fatal flaw of Prometheus . The audiences’ expectations are wildly different from the intentions of the filmmaker. Rather than simply jettison the Alien connection and make an original film (allowing the both the filmmaker and the audience the advantage of a blank slate), the makers of Prometheus attempted to create a synthesis, attaching elements of the Alien mythos into their story. Unfortunately, the resulting film suffers as a result. The plot of Prometheus is fairly simple. Scientists on Earth discover a series of ancient paintings and artifacts that indicate that our ancestors had contact with an a

GL is Gay. My 2cents.

Image
As many have heard by now, DC Comics has made a move they claimed to be bold and a huge change. They made GL gay. Not Hal Jordan. They turned the alternate universe Green Lantern, Alan Scott, gay. Cheap move. All hype, no substance. It made me sick. Not only that, but it opens huge plot holes. If Alan Scott is gay, where did Jade and Obsidian come from? This was a gimmick just to jump on the publicity of Obama supporting gay marriage. Gay for the sale of being gay is OFFENSIVE. Make it believable. Make it make sense. Make it MEAN something. If I were going to turn any DC character gay, it WOULD be a GL. But not Alan Scott. Here's my opinion. I want to say, first and foremost, this is NOT a bash on homosexuals. I fully support the freedom to choose whom you love, have sex with, and marry. I have gay friends. I have gay family members. The first date my wife and I went on was to a drag show to support a friend of mine who was performing. Secondly, but I feel in context of this forum

Spider-Man vs Batman

So we've got two more big Superhero movies coming out. The Spider-Man reboot. And! The Dark Knight Rises. I'm not anywhere near as excited about these two as I have been The Avengers. But I've been hearing all kinda of "Batman's gonna kick Spider-Man's ass!" and "Batman's gonna blow The Avengers out of the water!" And I'm here to throw in my 2cents. No way in hell is Batman gonna reach the Avengers. But I will argue over Spider-Man. Spider-Man is a far more kid-friendly franchise than this Batman trilogy has been. Spider-Man has seen a lot more advertising than DKR has. DKR will forever be the sequel to Heath Ledger's last movie. It might do better than the Crow sequels, but will suffer from the same stigmas. It will forever be compared to the one before it, Bane will forever be measured up against Joker, and it will always been seen lacking. Unless the guy playing Bane bites it before the movie releases. DKR looks very serious, brood

$200 Million for The Avengers in THREE DAYS

200 MILLION DOLLAR WEEKEND According to Box Office Mojo, The Avengers made $200 million in its opening weekend. Wow. Just...wow.

The Dark Knight Rises

Yeah, this film is going to rock. As much as I am looking forward to "The Avengers", this is my must-see "comic-book" movie of the year (feel free to note the absence of a certain web-slinger from this conversation; that forthcoming abomination deserves its own post). Nolan tackles comic-book films with a sense of seriousness and an epic scope that is unique. I don't believe the films are perfect: "Batman Begins" was a good, but not great movie, and "The Dark Knight" was about 30 minutes too long. Yet the tone of the films, the manner in which they are shot, the remarkable collection of actors come together to make them must-see viewing. I also love that Nolan is completing a trilogy and bringing his take on Batman to a close. I can't wait to see this film.

An Inauspicious Introduction

Hello world, My name is retinax5 and I am Lyesmith's all too often silent partner on Geekin. Luckily for a slacker like myself, Lyesmith is an awesome partner and has done a great job with the site. In the future, you can look forward to Lyesmith and myself posting podcasts of us debating the state of geekdom. In the meantime, please enjoy this first post. I wanted something special for my first post. I believe I have succeeded. Ladies and Gents, here is a brand new Avengers trailer! And, yes, this is a SAFE FOR WORK video. No naughty bits.

Lyesmith's Top 10 Villains

Image
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKxHpLZHQOs] I thought I'd take a break from comic reviews and do something just for fun. And we all know how much I love to give my opinion, so I decided to give my Top Ten Villains! It was hard to choose just ten, but I feel good about this line-up and I think you all will enjoy it. Feel free to post with additions, comments, or even your own Top Ten! And if I've got someone up here you can't stand or think is lame, SAY SO! Let's hear it.   Now, without further ado....   Villain Number 10 Azazel from Supernatural. Many actors portrayed this character, but none like Fredric Lehne. I've seen him in other stuff and have always been a fan, and this guy really brought this character to the forefront and made him a force to be reckoned with. His timing and attitude made it impossible to hate Azazel despite him being so nefarious. If you haven't watched this show, you've got to pick it up just to watch Fredric Lehne as Azaz

Lyesmith Comic Review #4

Image
Welcome to the 4th Comic Review! I've gone on comic over-load lately, so expect lots of updates over the next few days.       Legion of Super-Heroes I read these as a kid, and was a pretty big fan, back in the 90s. I kinda fizzled out the last few years, but I thought I'd give this reboot a try. I feel a -little- lost, because they retained a lot of the back-story from pre-52. I find that rather irritating; wasn't the point of the New 52 to make new jumping-on points for new readers? I shouldn't be lost a few pages into the book. But regardless, I pushed past it and kept reading, and I'm glad I did. I really enjoy this book and it kept my interest through to the current issue. Not going down in any Hall of Fame for awesome book ever, but definitely worth reading!         Legion Lost This book hit me some of the same way that the main Legion title did. I felt a little lost, and there was some back-story I wasn't clear on. But again, regardless, it's a good bo

Lyesmith: Comic Review #3

Image
Welcome to the third comic review! Today I'm going to try to focus a little more on Marvel, but then it's right back into DC! They've really had my attention lately with the New 52.   First of all, I've always been a Marvel guy. I grew up on X-Men and the various X-Titles and understood the Summers Family Tree before I could do multiplication. But this past few months, I've seen barely anything come out of Marvel that I've enjoyed, and that saddens me a great deal. That being said, I'm going to do a review of two series, both of which I love, but one of which I'm not currently liking. Ready? Too bad.           Journey Into Mystery Kieron Gillen is a literary god. Everything he's done with this series has had me giddy to read the next issue. I love his writing style, how he's made these characters REAL, and he's taking Loki in a direction no ever has before. He's ranking up there with Neil Giaman, Geoff Johns, R.A. Jones, Christopher Yost

Lyesmith: New 52 part 2

Image
As promised, I, Lyesmith, am back to deliver more reviews of DC's New 52. I just KNOW everyone is waiting to buy comics until they've heard my opinion on them, so here it is! Today we'll be focusing on Green Lantern, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Green Lantern: New Guardians, and Suicide Squad. Green lantern - I want to start by saying I love Hal Jordan. Nathan Fillion's Hal Jordan, not Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan. He's my favorite GL, and as far as I'm concern, THE GL. But I do love me some Guy. Anyway, this new Green Lantern series is keeping Hal Jordan front and center. And that makes me a happy little geek. It helps that I love Sinestro. I haven't always, but I love what Geoff Johns did with him during The Sinestro Wars and the person he made Sinestro into. I get a big 'Magneto' vibe from Sinestro and that appeals to me. At the end of my last set of reviews I called this Green Lantern (sort of), because so far the premise of the story (no major spo

First Blog! New 52; JLD, Shade, and I, Vampire.

Captain's Log, Stardate 3142012.1... Sorry, I've always wanted to say that. My first blog post seemed an appropriate place to live out that fantasy. Welcome to the first Geekin! Comic review. I'm Lyesmith, half of the dynamic duo (that's not copy written, is it?) that makes up Geekin! A blog/podcast/whatever else we decide to turn this monstrosity into, that covers everything that we're currently "geeking" over. Comics, movies, tv, and anything else that catches our fancy - you'll find our opinions and fan-boy squeals right here. Let's get this shindig goin', shall we? For the first one, I'm going to keep it light and easy. I'll be jazzin' it up a bit as we go along. I've spent today catching up on three of the New 52 titles from DC.   I, Vampire - This is an amazing comic. The art, the plot, the dialogue... I'm loving this book. It's a lot of fun, and again, feels a little disconnected from the rest of the DCU. It's
