SPOILERS: Review: Batman/Superman #3 - Lyesmith

Image
[caption id="attachment_263" align="aligncenter" width="590"] Batman/Superman by Kenneth Rocafort[/caption] Writer: Greg Pak Artist: Jae Lee/Yildiray Cinar Here's another comic I'm loving to death. The art is dark, grungy, with a bright life just under the surface. It gives a different edge to the characters, while still staying true to who they are. The story's amazing, I find myself glued to every page. The writing has got this dry, quick wit and I love the dialogue between the older Superman and Batman. I love banter. (BanterBanterBanter! Foamy the Squirrel, anybody?) But I find myself thinking that not much happened this issue. Lacked some meat! The Batmans and Supermans tussled some more, you got a little more back story between Older Bruce and Clark via a cute flashback between the two as young boys. To sum the whole issue up; Darkseid is coming. The only thing that can stop him is this crystal of unknown origin. They leave you with the

[caption id="attachment_253" align="aligncenter" width="590"] Cover[/caption] HAPPY COMIC WEDNESDAY! Or as I like to call it, Mid-Week Geeky Mini-Christmas. I feel like I should start sending out holiday cards every Wednesday. It sounds like a long title, but it'll catch on. This'll be a thing. Just watch. And now! ON THE COMICS! Writer :Rick Remender Artist: Daniel Acuna This issue was everything I want out of a Marvel comic book. This is what I mean when I say I want a comic meaty. It's got action, it's got some great one-on-one moments between characters, it's even got a moment or two of humor in it, and it progresses the story. It leaves you going "Wait! Wait! No! Two more pages! Just two more!!!" I won't ruin too much here, but while it progresses the story overall, between Wanda, Uriel and Eimin, it also has gives a few pages each to Rogue and Sunfire, Wolverine and (gasp!) Daken, Simon and Erik, Thor and Sentry, an

Character Spotlight: Demogoblin - Lyesmith

Image
Welcome to what I hope to be the first of many Geekin'! Character Spotlights! Where I'll be spotlighting lesser known characters and bringing you up to date on their origin, a little bit of their publication history, and their current status on the comic book world. This week we're focusing on DEMOGOBLN! Demogoblin is a Spider-Man villain from the 90s that, as a 90s kid, was one of my favorite villains. He went toe-to-toe with superheroes and villains alike; Captain America, Blade, Ghost Rider, Carnage, Venom, and Hobgoblin... Yikes! Okay, okay, big guy! Let's turn it down to a slow simmer, shall we? Demogoblin is, in my opinion, one of the most under-rated and unsung Spidey-villains, and certainly with some of the highest, untapped potential. [caption id="attachment_235" align="alignleft" width="300"] “Demogoblin possesses superhuman strength, capable of lifting around 10 tons. He also had sharp teeth and claws. His skin could cause burns

SPOILERS: Review: Nova #7 - Lyesmith

Image
Welcome back, Geeks! Now we've got our review for Nove #7, giving us our Marvel Cosmic fix. It's not Guardians of the Galaxy, but it's a nice appetizer to hold us over. Remember to check out the fanpage over at www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast for news, pictures, assorted geekery, and soon to spotlight geeky freebies from across the internet!    I don't normally share whole-pages from comics, but this was too good NOT to.    And THERE'S all you need to know about this comic to decide if you want to pick it up. That's it. If that doesn't make you want to run out and buy this comic book, then I don't know what will. This is another FUN comic. It doesn't take itself too seriously. I usually hate teen superheroes, especially in their own titles. (Just wait for the next Young Avengers. I'll review that and get all KINDS of hate my way...) And I really didn't think I was going to enjoy Nova, but I really have.    This issue kinds Nova trying to find

Spoilers: Review: Red Hood and the Outlaws #23 - Lyesmith

Writer: James Tynion IV Pencils: Julius Gopez    Hey, geeks! It's Wednesday again and that means MOAR COMICS! Today we've got Red Hood and The Outlaws #23. Don't forget to check out the facebook page where I'll be featuring weekly freebies from across the internet! www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast    Anybody who's been in ear shot of me since New 52 started knows this is my favorite comic coming out of DC. While I miss Kenneth Rocafort's artwork, Julius Gopez's art really works for the story. And this was such a great Roy-centered issue. Roy's wit and sarcasm keep me grinning through the first half. Nothing big and serious happens this issue, outside of bringing all ours heroes back into a central location.    I'll admit that I'm a little torn lately, I love the Roy and Kori dynamic, but I have to admit, I really really enjoy the play back and forth between Roy and Jade. It's just so much fun. Mostly because Jade is so CRAZY!    I expect the NE

Spoilers: Review: Demon Knights #23 - Lyesmith

It's time for our DC New 52 review! Before we get started, don't forget to visit us at our Facebook fanpage (www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast) and follow us on Twitter (@Geekin_Podcast) and give us a shout! Writer: Robert Venditti Artist: Phil Winslade Cover Artist: Howard Porter (LOVED this cover!) Demon Knights has consistently been one of my favorite comics coming out of the New 52. And while the list of comics I say that about is a lengthy one, it's no less true about this book. I'm terribly sad to see it go, as issue 23 is it's last issue. Demon Knights feature a group of characters like none of the other DC titles have. Or Marvel, for that matter. Reminiscent of the Prince Valiant comic strips I used to read in the Sunday paper (The Funnies, my grandpa called them) as a kid; it's medieval fantasy at it's best. You have brave knights, alluring amazons, wizards and sorcerers, immortals, demons and vampires, and a whole slew of characters that would seem wi

SPOILERS: Review: Infinity #1/Weekly Recap - Lyesmith

It's Wednesday and time for your weekly reviews again! Boy, it's been a busy week, so before we get into our first review, let's recap the week. My review for Cyberforce #5 was noticed and retweeted by the lovely Bridget Silvestri @B_Silvestri), wife of none other than Marc Silvestri (@Marc_Silvestri), comic book creator, writer, artist, and top-cow over at Top Cow comics (@TopCow), whom also retweeted our review of his comic. Needless to stay, there was swooning and fainting and maybe more than a little bragging in the Geekin' camp this past week. If you're not following us on Twitter, you should be! Get out there and give us a shout! @Geekin_Podcast The Facebook fanpage (Which, of course, you have liked, right?) is starting to grow and become a lot busier; we've had a huge jump this week (broke 75 likes!). REVIEW: Spoilers: Cyberforce #5

Image
Creator/Writer/Art Director/Character Designer: Marc Silvestri Pencilers and Inks: Khoi Pham/Laura Braga/Sal Regla Colorists: Arif Prianto/Andy Troy I want to start off by talking about that cover. (Pictured above) I've loved Marc Silvestri since I was a kid and he was doing old X-Men books, then again as a teenager through his original Darkness run, and now as adult, he never ceases to please. He's wearing a lot of different hats on this issue, but it pays off. Gorgeous cover art, and a great book all the way around. I also want to note that TopCow being the amazing comic book company they are, have put Cyberforce on their website - for free. That's right, you can get Cyberforce issues 1-5 ab-so-lute-ly free right here at: http://topcow.com/moos/43-latest-moos/768-read-cyber-force-1-5-for-free I highly recommend you picking these up. This book has everything that I think Marvel and DC are lacking. Lots of action, lots of story, great dialogue between characters, this book

REVIEW: Spoilers: Green Lantern #23 - Lyesmith

Image
Writer: Robert Venditti Artist: Billy Tan I'm a long time Green Lantern fan. A long time Hal Jordan fan. Since the New 52 started, I haven't been as excited about it as I was before. The last few issues have brought me back to looking forward to this comic. This issue finds Hal Jordan as the leader of the Green Lanterns after an attack by Larfleeze. Never able to catch a break, after his first order as leader being to begin recruitment back up he lost fresh ring-slingers to Larfleeze's attack. The loss weighs heavily on Jordan, who after finding out that during the attack a prison of the sciencells killed a lantern and escaped. Of course, Hal decides to go off after the prisoner alone. His reasoning was that he didn't want to put another lantern in danger. I understand wanting to redeem himself and putting something in the 'win' column, but the rings have been glitching lately. The power just flickering off for a few seconds, only to come back suddenly and witho

REVIEW: Spoilers: Cable and X-Force #12 - Lyesmith

Image
Writer: Dennis Hopeless/Cullen Bunn Art: Salvador Larroca/Frank D'Armata I'll start off by saying that I'm really enjoying this run. The story and the artwork have been consistently entertaining. This issue finds us picking up Hope in the future with Blaquesmith and what appears to be a female Strife. (gasp! who could that be??? Yeah. I guessed it in the last page of the last issue too.) We get to further Domino and Colossus' relationship; which I love. Despite the fact that Domino's slept with Wolverine (runty, hairy, old Canadian. YUCK.) I really like her for Colossus. While I've always loved his and Kitty's relationship, I'm all for exploring characters with partners that are outside of their norm. Instead of giving Piotr someone who's like Kitty Pryde, softer, sensitive, nurturing, pair him up with someone fun, unstable, and completely wrong for him. Piotr's changed in the recent years, he needs pushed. And Domino could use someone who genuin

The Doctor's Who? Oh. Peter Capaldi. - Lyesmith

Image
By now you must know that the 12th Doctor has been announced as none other than Peter Capaldi. Now there seems to be some controversy, because Peter also played a character known as Lucius Caecilius Iucundus in a previous episode of Doctor Who, Fires of Pompeii, in the 4th season, back in 2008. So my question to is... Does this bother you? Or do you think this has been planned or it will be ret-conned*? Do you /care/? You hate it because he's too old to be "your" Doctor? You don't care, as long as it's not Matt Smith anymore? Let your voice be heard right here on the Geekin' blog. What do YOU think about Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor? If you've been following along with the blog (I mean, you HAVE been reading the other posts, right???) then you know I'm not there in the series yet. But soon, I'll have a more solid opinion on Peter Capaldi. In the mean time, let's hear it from you! If you have an opinion that differs from the choices on the p

Favorite Captains - Lyesmith

Who's your favorite Captain? I was originally going to restrict this to Sci-Fi only, but there were too many Captains that I enjoyed that were multi-genre. So! I'm allowing you to add your own Captain to the list, (I'm even letting you vote for more than one, because I'm an indecisive bastard my-own-self) however, let's first start by defining what makes a "Captain". cap·tain /ˈkaptÉ™n/ Noun The person in command of a ship. There ya go! They have to be the leader of a ship. It can have a crew or be one-man. It can be a boat, a spaceship, or an aircraft. Extra points for originality. Let's see who YOUR favorite Captain is! (Sidenote: This is just who your /favorite/ is. This isn't who the BEST Captain is, because we all know Mal would win that contest. :P ) If you're new to Geekin'!, don't forget to visit our Facebook Fanpage! www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast [polldaddy poll=7293082]

SPOILERS: Flash Annual #2 review - Lyesmith

Image
SPOILERS. IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS ISSUE, I'M ABOUT TO RUIN IT FOR YOU. I've never been a huge Flash fan. I like the character fine, but mostly in a team setting. He's perfect in the Justice League, but his own book just never really appealed to me. But the cover grabbed me. I'm a huge GL fan and I've always enjoyed Hal and Barry's friendship. This story is exactly what I needed to read. So much in the DC (and Marvel, but that's another post) is huge, epic, world-ending, life-or-death of everything as we know it stuff. And it's getting a bit tiresome. Big story arcs are great, but I need a break in between. And this is exactly what I needed. Barry meets Hal for drinks as buddies, not as heroes. They're goofing off before Hal has to go back to running Oa. They end up getting teleported to another planet where they're forced to fight in a gladiator arena. Apparently, as shown in a flash back, this is all part of the adventure they had when they
