SPOILERS: Review: Buzzkill Dark Horse Comics

Buzzkill #4 of 4 from Dark Horse Comics Writers/Creators: Donny Cates and Mark Reznicek Artist: Geoff Shaw Colors: Lauren Affe So I did the review for the first issue. Buzzkill #1 Review Which you loyal Geeks and Geekettes undoubtedly have already read.  Right? Anyway. The mini-series is now over and I have to say this is going down as one of my favorite stories of all time. This is just brilliant. The main character, Francis, is an ex-superhero who's powers only manifest when he's on something. Drinking. Smoking. Drugs. The more he does the stronger he is. He's like Popeye only with whiskey instead of spinach. After a huge knock-down drag-out fight that left scores dead that he can barely even remember happening, he decides to quit. He needs to get sober. To save himself and his relationship. But it seems it's almost too little too late. His girlfriend's already seeing someone else, he's been kicked off his super team, no

Happy Mid-Week Mini Christmas, Geeks and Geekettes! We're back with Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe #4!  Wait, a minute. Didn't I, like, JUST review this comic? Why, yessiree, I did! Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe #1 However, this being issue #4, is the end of the mini-series. And what a series it was! Magic! Chaos! Alternate realities! Mind-controlled heroes! Cameos galore! Longshot's abilities go haywire when he runs into cosmic entity, The In-Betweener, and a corrupt cosmic cube. He gets thrown into another reality where the Chaos and Order sides of  The In-Betweener are split and everything is wonky. Order is running SHIELD's magic-policing division and Chaos is trapped by his twin. Brother. Otherself. Guy. In order to restore reality, bring the two halves of the In-Between together, Longshot has to save the cosmic cube (in the form of a demon trapped in a teddy bear named Mr. Dapples) from the Order half while dodging the rampant des

Supergirl #26 Writer: Tony Bedard Artist: Yildiray Cinar Happy Mid-Week Mini Christmas, Geeks and a Geekettes! This week we'll be doing Supergirl #26, Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe #4, and Buzzkill #4.  While not a hardcore Supergirl reader, it is a book I've picked up occasionally and have kept up with the story. But this issue is a little different. This issue, we have fan-titled "Nu" Lobo. But whom DC calls "real" Lobo.  I'm really excited about this character and what it means for Lobo, Nu or otherwise. This issue picks up where Lobo #0 during Villains month leaves off. "Real" Lobo, svelte Lobo, thin Lobo, not-the-main-man Lobo, is in search of The Man Main Lobo, who is apparently an impostor. Small Lobo picks up some intel on where The Main Man might be hiding, but it was old news; The Main Man is hold up on Earth, and only one woman will know for sure where to find him. That one woman just so happens to

Writers: Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis Artist: Howard Porter Happy Mid-Week Mini-Christmas, everybody! Today we'll be reviewing Justice League 3000 #1. This comic has been hinted at and advertised here and there for weeks. We've seen this gimmick before with the DC 1-Million line, amongst others. A futuristic twist on the Justice League meant to boost sales and maybe make a few collectibles out of the new and different costumes. I'll admit it, I bought a few of the 1-Million issues that tied in with the current comics I was collecting at the time. And while the vast majority of those comics were iffy at best (Don't get me started on Kyle Rayner's story line. Grrroooaaaaan. More "Kyle is soooo special!") there were issues, or more appropriately, parts of issues, that were at least amusing. Robin The Toy Wonder , android version of Batman's side kick was pretty funny. I read the hell out of the Young Justice 1 Million. But I digress.

SPOILERS: Review: Six-Gun Gorilla #6 - Follow Up

Image
Hey, Geeks and Geekettes, I guess this'll be the week for follow-ups on series we've reviewed before. This one will be on the conclusion to the mini-series from BOOM! Studios. Writer: Simon Spurrier Artist: Jeff Stokely Now, if you guys remember way back during Weird West Week, I reviewed this comic as well a others, you can find that here . As I said then, the first time I read about this comic and it's concept, I was largely skeptical. I thought it sounded like a silly idea and not anything I was even remotely interested in - however, it was getting a lot of press, so I decided to try the first issue. I was immediately hooked. The emotion behind the story itself, the message of the overall plot, the way the characters come to live and make you genuinely care bout them is just astonishing. The ending to this serious couldn't be better. This is not the ending you WANT, but it's the ending the story NEEDED. I loved every panel. I won't s

SPOILERS: Review: Hinterkind #3 - Follow-Up

Image
Hey, Geeks and Geekettes, it's that time again, Comic Book Wednesday, or better known as MID-WEEK MINI CHRISTMAS-Mas-mas-mas.... A few weeks ago I did a review for Vertigo's  Hinterkind #1  (you remember that, don't ya?) so now that we've hit issue 3, I thought it'd be nice to do a follow up and see how the series is coming along. Writer: Ian Edginton Artist: Francesco Trifogli It is probably wildly unfair, but still yet, it's hard not to compare this series to Image's Saga. While the style of artwork has some similarities, and the over all tone of the story is likewise similar in places, the two books are still very different. So I'm going to do my best to judge this book as this book, and not compare it to Saga.  Now keep in mind, we're only on issue 3, the story is just starting to build, but by issue 3 we know more about the world at large than we did in the first issue. As we find out more about in this issue, the my

SPOILERS: Review: Black Science #1

Image
Hey, Geeks and Geekettes! Here's another science-meets-fantasy review. Maybe I'm in a mood this week. Black Science #1 comes to us from Image Comics Writer: Rick Remender Artist: Matteo Scalera I wasn't sure about this book till the end. It did keep me entertained the entire time, but it seemed so dark. I wasn't sure this was one I'd want to revisit. The art was great, this strange world that we're immediately thrown into instantly pops. We follow Grant Ward, apparently a scientist, as he rushes to get back to his children and return them home. As the book progresses we find that Ward found a way to move between dimensions. He's troubled by how his obsession has ruined his marriage and personal life, but the only thing that matters to him now is getting is family home safely. He's chased by murderous fish-people into a temple occupied by electric-tongued frog people.  I won't ruin too much of the story, but it's got a ver

Hey, Geeks and Geekettes! It's Mid-Week Mini-Christmas, also known as Comic Book Wednesday! Today we're gonna do Aphrodite IX #6, but stay tuned for Black Science #1 coming up next! Now then... On the to review! Writer: Matt Hawkins Artist: Stjepan Sejic Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a pretty big Top Cow fan, and a pretty big Aphrodite IX fan. Hawkins and Sejic's relaunch of the title has not disappointed and as we flow into the next story arc they turn up the notch just a little. I've done a review on this book before, but with the new story arc starting, I felt it necessary to do a follow-up. I'm excited for this book; we've gotten the set-up out of the way, we know who we're dealing with and what she's looking for. "Now we get down to the tacks and the brass." Aphrodite IX is being hunted by Gen mercenaries, whom in true Stjepan Sejic fashion are looking pretty bad ass, when she's also discovered by a grou

SPOILERS: Review: Manifest Destiny # 1

Image
MANIFEST DESTINY #1 Written by Chris Dingess Art by Matthew Roberts Published by Image Comics (November 13, 2013) Manifest Destiny is a fantasy retelling of the Lewis and Clark Expedition into the American West. Writer Chris Dingess springboards his story off of an actual historic oddity: President Thomas Jefferson believed that a real possibility existed that Lewis and Clark would come across prehistoric beasts and lost tribes of mythological people. Sadly, that proved not to be the case; the expedition merely encountered countless aboriginal tribes, all of whom were informed they were now American citizens to be ruled by the Great Father in Washington DC. But in Dingess’ alternative tale, monsters do indeed exist in the dark unexplored reaches of the newly purchased American West. We quickly discover that the true purpose of the Lewis and Clark expedition is not so much to explore the Louisiana Purchase, as much as it is to seek out and remove supernatural creatures fro

Voice in the Dark #1 By  Larime Taylor www.facebook.com/larime.taylor @TopCow                            As a big fan of Top Cow and their crew, I've been seeing this comic advertised for weeks now. I'm not sure what I was expecting out of this comic, but I ended up pleasantly surprised. If I had to liken it to other piece of work, I think I would say it's a little Dexter and a little A Scanner Darkly . Now I say A Scanner Darkly to use as an example in tone. I could easily see this in the same format, kind of a moving graphic novel movie, but that's still not where it compares for me. How can I put this... most times when I read comics, there's a background noise. Kind of like a soundtrack. A constant buzz of sound. What Taylor did here was give us a story where the only background noise was the main character's narration.                               Where it compares to Dexter is that the main character seems to be struggling

Harley Quinn #0 Writers: Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti                                           Artist: Charlie Adlard, Art Baltazar, Becky Cloonan, Darwyn Cooke, Tony S. Daniel, Sam Kieth, Bruce Timm, Jim Lee, Stephane Roux, Tradd Moore, Chad Hardin, Adam Hughes, Dave Johnson, Dan Panosian, Jeremy Roberts, and Walter Simonson INSANELY WACKY! This is probably one the best ways to introduce a new book with a character this crazy. Each artist gets at least a page and it was wonderfully done. Harley talks with the writers about her book, who should draw it, the tone and subject matter.  There's not a whole lot to say about the story, because there really isn't one, except that you some awesome art from some of the most talented artists around, and a couple of cameos to boot. If you're a Harley Quinn fan, I think this comic is for you. Very fun. One I'll be going back over several times before putting it away. As always, visit u

SPOILERS: Review: Uncanny X-Men 14

Welcome to another mid-week Mini Christmas, also called by it's lesser known title, Comic Book Wednesday. Today we'll be reviewing UNcanny X-Men #14. Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Chris Bachalo                   I think I have a new favorite gay comic book character. For the first time in a long time, I've found a character who just HAPPENS to be gay. It's not his entire identity. They didn't make a big fanfare about it. In fact, even in the book, the response to the character's declarative over his sexuality is "I don't care. What does this have to do with this?" Emma Frost , I love you all over again. Mr. Benjamin Deeds , I adore you as well, sir. I am excited to learn more about this guy, I am excited to see more from him, and I love this book. Bendis handled this BEAUTIFULLY. Bendis handled this the way the vast majority of gay characters SHOULD be handled. THANK YOU, SIR.                      I have a problem wi
