Weird West Week - RPGs

Welcome Geeks and Geekettes to another day of Weird West Week! The style of the Weird Western lends itself well to many different outlets. We've already discussed tv, cartoons, movies, books, comic books... but to really amerce yourself in the world of the Weird Western, you have to experience it yourself. And the best way to do that is through RPGs. RolePlaying Games. If you don't know or have never been involved in a RPG, I suggest looking into the history of games like Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) and Pathfinder. While those games are in a medieval setting, they're wonderful introductory into the world of RolePlaying Games, and arguably have the most resources available to first-timers and beginners.

Below are a list of RPGs set in the world of the Weird West. Check 'em out, play through 'em, and if you have any favorites that aren't listed here, PLEASE leave a comment and let us know what Weird Western RPG YOU love most.

Wild West Exodus is a miniatures game played by 2 to 4 players in control of the faction of their choice. In the world of WWX, every model has the potential to be a hero or a villain. The game mechanics and rule set, currently in development with Alessio Cavatore, will feature exciting game play from the first dice roll. Each player will be allowed to field a posse of 6 to 40 models. The WWX rules have been designed to allow for scaling of the game to high or low model counts without causing rules issues.

One of the most exciting parts of the Wild West Exodus game mechanic is the reusable influence pool. The influence pool will give players the option to gamble away a set amount of tokens in return for a reroll of the dice. Be careful what you gamble on because once the tokens are committed they are lost for that turn. The D10 system gives the game life and options that round out easily and allow for quick decision making.
Wild West Exodus is set in an alternate reality based upon the post-Civil War era in the late Nineteenth Century. The game takes place in a twisted and changed version of the American Wild West, a time in history full of change and uncertainty. There is a broad variety of people inhabiting the areas of the game, from the native population to vigilante outlaws, settlers, immigrants, and more. Everything and everyone has their purpose, even though everything is not what it seems. Underneath the exterior, there is a group of 'watchers' known as The Dark Council that manipulate and twist the world to fulfill their goals and desires.

As the game continues to develop, you will see and hear about places that are equally familiar and unfamiliar...twisted by The Dark Council.

While Wild West Exodus is a table-top, miniature based RPG, what follows is your standard paper and pencil, dice, and your imagination kind of RPG.

In Development
Imagine: A fantasy world, but not one based on Medieval/Dark Ages European culture and myth, but rather one based on the tropes of the Spaghetti Western and Chinese Wuxia. Add steampunk elements. Mix well.

A fantasy world that’s The Gunslinger meets Storm Riders meets Deadwood meets Afro Samurai meets The Wild Wild West meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon meets Django meets Brisco County meets House of Flying Daggers and more.

A fantasy world that’s explored through a constantly-updated website, a tabletop role-playing game, a web series, artwork, fiction, comics and much, much, more. A fantasy world that is shaped by its own fan community.

This is Far West.

This is actually a personal favorite of mine. I grew up playing Vampire and Werewolf, favoring Werewolf. Throwing this concept into the Wild West was a great addition to the story and an amazing backdrop for adding new Changing Breeds. As my favorite Changing Breed was the Nuwisha, were-coyotes, Werewolf: The Wild West was exciting and engaging.

Of course there are many other RPGs based into the Weird West. Best way to find out which one is going to be your favorite? Grab a game. Get a group. And play. If you don't like it? Start a new one next week! RPGs are an awesome way to pass the time with friends, and introduce new friends to your group. Even if you can't manage to get a new-comer to play the first night, watching can be fun and hilarious in and of itself. Check back for the next installment of Weird West Week!
