SPOILERS: Review: Stormwatch25/Phantom Stranger13

Image
Hey there, Geeks and Geekettes! Welcome to another Comic Book Wednesday which means, of course, comic reviews! We'll start the week off with DC Comics Phantom Stranger #13 and Stormwatch #25. Writer: J.M. DeMatteis Artist: Fernando Blanco Phantom Stranger is a part of the more "magic centered" side of DC Comics, along with Justice League Dark, it has more of a Vertigo feel to it, but this time around, with the New 52 reboot, they're grounding this side of the DCU in more connection with everything else. It doesn't feel so disconnected as it did before. Phantom Stranger is a fun and... strange comic. It has heavy religious tones, as we're lead to believe that the Phantom Stranger used to be Judas, the very same who betrayed Christ and is now kept alive to do God's bidding in some undefined penance. This issue we find the Stranger in the house he's used for his alter ego and mortal guide, Philip Stark. Philip Stark was a real man - a serial killer, whom ...

SPOILERS: Review: Batman 23.4 - Joker's Daughter - Villains Month - Lyesmith

Happy Mid-Week-Mini-Christmas, Geeks and Geekettes! It's another Comic Book Wednesday and today we're going to look at Joker's Daughter in Batman #23.4, another installment of Villains Month. As always, check out our Facebook Fanpage at www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast and follow us on Twitter @Geekin_Podcast for all kinds of news, pictures, freebies and assorted geekery! Now on to the review! Batman 23.4 Villains Month - Joker's Daughter Writer: Ann Nocenti Artist: Georges Jeanty So, I was kind of excited for this, because I really wanted to see where they were going with it. We've seen the sketches for months now. I expected it to be weird, but not this weird. First of all, this isn't actually Joker's daughter, which wildly disappointed me. I mean, we find that out pretty damn quick. I was hoping they'd drag it out, really let us think this might be his kid, let the nerd rage boil a bit; but no such luck. The girl, who much later in the book you find out...

SPOILERS: Review: Batman/Superman #3 - Lyesmith

[caption id="attachment_263" align="aligncenter" width="590"] Batman/Superman by Kenneth Rocafort[/caption] Writer: Greg Pak Artist: Jae Lee/Yildiray Cinar Here's another comic I'm loving to death. The art is dark, grungy, with a bright life just under the surface. It gives a different edge to the characters, while still staying true to who they are. The story's amazing, I find myself glued to every page. The writing has got this dry, quick wit and I love the dialogue between the older Superman and Batman. I love banter. (BanterBanterBanter! Foamy the Squirrel, anybody?) But I find myself thinking that not much happened this issue. Lacked some meat! The Batmans and Supermans tussled some more, you got a little more back story between Older Bruce and Clark via a cute flashback between the two as young boys. To sum the whole issue up; Darkseid is coming. The only thing that can stop him is this crystal of unknown origin. They leave you with the ...

Spoilers: Review: Red Hood and the Outlaws #23 - Lyesmith

Writer: James Tynion IV Pencils: Julius Gopez    Hey, geeks! It's Wednesday again and that means MOAR COMICS! Today we've got Red Hood and The Outlaws #23. Don't forget to check out the facebook page where I'll be featuring weekly freebies from across the internet! www.facebook.com/GeekinPodcast    Anybody who's been in ear shot of me since New 52 started knows this is my favorite comic coming out of DC. While I miss Kenneth Rocafort's artwork, Julius Gopez's art really works for the story. And this was such a great Roy-centered issue. Roy's wit and sarcasm keep me grinning through the first half. Nothing big and serious happens this issue, outside of bringing all ours heroes back into a central location.    I'll admit that I'm a little torn lately, I love the Roy and Kori dynamic, but I have to admit, I really really enjoy the play back and forth between Roy and Jade. It's just so much fun. Mostly because Jade is so CRAZY!    ...

Lyesmith Comic Review #4

Image
Welcome to the 4th Comic Review! I've gone on comic over-load lately, so expect lots of updates over the next few days.       Legion of Super-Heroes I read these as a kid, and was a pretty big fan, back in the 90s. I kinda fizzled out the last few years, but I thought I'd give this reboot a try. I feel a -little- lost, because they retained a lot of the back-story from pre-52. I find that rather irritating; wasn't the point of the New 52 to make new jumping-on points for new readers? I shouldn't be lost a few pages into the book. But regardless, I pushed past it and kept reading, and I'm glad I did. I really enjoy this book and it kept my interest through to the current issue. Not going down in any Hall of Fame for awesome book ever, but definitely worth reading!         Legion Lost This book hit me some of the same way that the main Legion title did. I felt a little lost, and there was some back-story I wasn't clear on. But again, regardless, it's a g...

Lyesmith: New 52 part 2

Image
As promised, I, Lyesmith, am back to deliver more reviews of DC's New 52. I just KNOW everyone is waiting to buy comics until they've heard my opinion on them, so here it is! Today we'll be focusing on Green Lantern, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Green Lantern: New Guardians, and Suicide Squad. Green lantern - I want to start by saying I love Hal Jordan. Nathan Fillion's Hal Jordan, not Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan. He's my favorite GL, and as far as I'm concern, THE GL. But I do love me some Guy. Anyway, this new Green Lantern series is keeping Hal Jordan front and center. And that makes me a happy little geek. It helps that I love Sinestro. I haven't always, but I love what Geoff Johns did with him during The Sinestro Wars and the person he made Sinestro into. I get a big 'Magneto' vibe from Sinestro and that appeals to me. At the end of my last set of reviews I called this Green Lantern (sort of), because so far the premise of the story (no major spo...

First Blog! New 52; JLD, Shade, and I, Vampire.

Captain's Log, Stardate 3142012.1... Sorry, I've always wanted to say that. My first blog post seemed an appropriate place to live out that fantasy. Welcome to the first Geekin! Comic review. I'm Lyesmith, half of the dynamic duo (that's not copy written, is it?) that makes up Geekin! A blog/podcast/whatever else we decide to turn this monstrosity into, that covers everything that we're currently "geeking" over. Comics, movies, tv, and anything else that catches our fancy - you'll find our opinions and fan-boy squeals right here. Let's get this shindig goin', shall we? For the first one, I'm going to keep it light and easy. I'll be jazzin' it up a bit as we go along. I've spent today catching up on three of the New 52 titles from DC.   I, Vampire - This is an amazing comic. The art, the plot, the dialogue... I'm loving this book. It's a lot of fun, and again, feels a little disconnected from the rest of the DCU. It's...
