Weird West Week - TV Shows

Image
Welcome back, Geeks and Geekettes! It's WEIRD WEST WEEK at the Geekin' blog! Today on Weird West Week we'll be focusing on Weird Western themed TV Shows, including a few cartoons. (Cartoons! Yesssss!) BraveStarr This tv show ranks up there with ThunderCats, SilverHawks, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Visionnaires, and other great classic 80s cartoons. Set in the distant future on a planet called New Texas... Well, I'll let the BraveStarr theme song speak for itself. With his partner, Thirty-Thirty - a "techno horse", last of the Equestroids and armed with his gun "Sara-Jane", BraveStarr kept New Texas safe from the outlaw Tex-Hex and his gang. As with most 80s cartoons, BraveStarr could get a little hokey at times, but they always ended with a message of morality, much like He-Man did. This cartoon had a huge impact on me as a small child, and I'm happy to share it with my children today. Galaxy Rangers Here's the ext...

Doctor WHAT?! - Lyesmith

Pretty soon I'll run out of Doctor Who puns for my titles. But I'll burn that bridge when I get to it. (I think that's how that metaphor goes...) It's been a while since my last Doctor Who update. A couple of reasons for that. These past few weeks have been rather hectic, but I'd be lying if I said something else hadn't distracted me. What could possibly distract me from the TARDIS-y goodness of The Doctor? Torchwood. [caption id="attachment_165" align="alignleft" width="590"] TORCHWOOD.[/caption] Captain Jack Harkness is quickly rising the ranks of my favorite Sci-Fi Captains and Scoundrels list. ("You're what?" Just wait. That's another post.) When I started Torchwood, I was expecting more Doctor Who-esque television. Boy was I wrong. The language, the sexual content, the violence, the maturity level all the way around was cranked up. That being said, after I got over the initial shock, I loved it. Captain Jack ...

The Doctor is dead! Long live the Doctor! I've finished the first season of Doctor Who and Christopher Eccleston has regenerated into David Tennant. I must say, I'm wildly disappointed, even though I knew it was coming. I love Mr. Eccleston as the Doctor (can't wait to see him as Malekith in Thor 2!), I loved his chemistry with Jack Harkness, and I'll miss him terriblly. I've been eating up Doctor Who ever since, and already nearly done with the second season. David Tennant is a wonderful addition to the show, and I think a better fit if they're going to pursue some soft of relationship between the Doctor and Rose. I like his energy. If I was going to compare the two, Eccleston and Tennant, I think I'd say that Eccleston delivers a threat better. If he says he's going to kill you, you believe it. Tennant is softer. It makes me a little eager for Matt Smith, just to see how someone so much younger than Eccleston and Tennant pulls off being The Doctor. But...

Doctor Which? - Lyesmith

Further into the season now, ended last night with the episode Dalek. Won't lie, when the episode started, I had serious concerns. At first, the Dalek is a little... hokey. Screeching like he does. Looking like a terrible R2-D2 rip-off. My wife was sitting next to me yelling "Do not disassemble! Johnny-5 is ALIVE!" through-out the episode. But I have to say, the last half totally redeemed it. Again, the effects quality is lacking, but the story and acting and characters tend to make up for it in the end. The episode ended up being kind of a tear-jerker. I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely looking forward to more, but I'm still not getting the "omigawd-this-is-so-awesome". It hasn't quite lived up to the hype. As of yet, anyway...   More to follow.

I've finally done it. I've started the journey into the wibbly wobbly timey wimey world of Doctor Who.  Starting with Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor as suggested, I'll continue to blog my journey as I continue down this odd little rabbit hole. While I'm currently enjoying Eccleston's Doctor, I'm underwhelmed. I'm not getting the awesomeness that's being raved about yet. But we'll stick it out. I hear after the first season that it gets a lot better. The graphics are uber-cheesy, even for 2005. But I expect that's budget issues. Comments, suggestions, and complaints are welcome!
