Jack 1979 (Issue 1) Review - Lyesmith

Image
@tehcrashedmedia "A brand-new comic about a bad ass, monster hunting, time traveling, mustache wearing son of a bitch named Jack the Ripper." That sentence ALONE should have you scrambling to support this comic, but in case it doesn't, have a review! Jack1979 is brought to you by Writer Jon Paul Anthony Hart, Artist Davey Siddall and Colorist Joshua Jensen. The idea is that Jack the Ripper was framed. See, Jack is a monster hunter. Not the monster. He's protecting the world and the people he loves from the real monsters who are possessing prostitutes in 1888 London. What's the significance of '1979'? Well, you'll have to read and support the book to find out... Without giving too much away, I'm going to do my best to convince you why you need to support this comic. Hart's writing and Siddall's art work in perfect symmetry to bring to life a vibrant and engaging world that's not just exciting, but fun even when ...

Review: @NewWorldsComics 'Wynter'

Image
New Worlds Comics is a new independent digital comic book publisher. Their two titles are Wynter and Goof . Lyesmith had the pleasure of reviewing the first two issues of Wynter , both available on the app for your iPad. Lyesmith: I'm going to give the warning that this is for mature readers, but I will say, it's nothing explicit or for the sake of being explicit. It's all tastefully done and if it were a movie would probably teeter between a PG-13 and an R depending on how some of the scenes were handled. Basically, when it comes to kids (read: teenagers) you're getting the warning I give whenever I suggest any comic book - be a parent. Read it. Judge it based on your kids maturity. Moving on. Set in a futuristic universe filled with populated planets and trillions of human lives, Liz Wynter struggles with the fact that she's not special. Human life has gone on for so long that it's reached ever version of every person it could ever poss...

Kickstarter Spotlight: Creepy Scarlett

Image
Hey, Geeks and Geekettes, welcome to the Geekin' review of Creepy Scarlett by Graeme Buchan.   @ScarlettComic     Buy Creepy Scarlett Book One I knew little-to-nothing about Creepy Scarlett, other than what I read from the Kickstarter page, when I started reading this comic. Trying to keep an open mind, I tried very hard not to make comparisons until I was completely caught up with the book. Funny enough, some of the things that came to mind at first glance stayed with me throughout the book, but became more superficial. The cover art and general theme reminded me of the KISS: Psycho Circus run back in the late 90s. I was in the height of my KISS fandom and ate every issue of that series up like it was going out of style. (Heh.) The feel of creepy (oh, I'm a roll today, folks) themes mixed well with 'Creepy Scarlett"'s mythology and reminded me of 'Psycho Circus' in a very good way. Samurai armor featuring imagery of Scarlett...

Tales of Honor - Honorverse

Image
@TalesofHonor @TopCow Honor Harrington is the heroine of the eponymous "Honorverse", a universe described in a series of best-selling military science fiction books, written by David Weber . If you haven't heard about Honor Harrington, The Honorverse, or Tales of Honor, don't feel bad. I hadn't either at first, and still likely wouldn't know of it's existence if it weren't for my rabid obsession love for everything that has anything to do with Top Cow comics. But brace yourself, because you're about to hear a lot more about it, and not just because you clicked on a link for a blog post about it. Evergreen Studios is launching into a multi-media barrage for Tales of Honor. Evergreen has Top Cow's Matt Hawkins writing the comic book adaptation, the art's by Jung-Geun Yoon and Linda Sejic. This is my first viewing of Yoon's work, but Sejic is always a good name to see on a comic! It was very interesting to hear ...

SPOILERS: Review: Buzzkill Dark Horse Comics

Image
Buzzkill #4 of 4 from Dark Horse Comics Writers/Creators: Donny Cates and Mark Reznicek Artist: Geoff Shaw Colors: Lauren Affe So I did the review for the first issue. Buzzkill #1 Review Which you loyal Geeks and Geekettes undoubtedly have already read.  Right? Anyway. The mini-series is now over and I have to say this is going down as one of my favorite stories of all time. This is just brilliant. The main character, Francis, is an ex-superhero who's powers only manifest when he's on something. Drinking. Smoking. Drugs. The more he does the stronger he is. He's like Popeye only with whiskey instead of spinach. After a huge knock-down drag-out fight that left scores dead that he can barely even remember happening, he decides to quit. He needs to get sober. To save himself and his relationship. But it seems it's almost too little too late. His girlfriend's already seeing someone else, he's been kicked off his super team, no ...

Spoilers: Review: Longshot Saves The Marvel U

Image
Happy Mid-Week Mini Christmas, Geeks and Geekettes! We're back with Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe #4!  Wait, a minute. Didn't I, like, JUST review this comic? Why, yessiree, I did! Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe #1 However, this being issue #4, is the end of the mini-series. And what a series it was! Magic! Chaos! Alternate realities! Mind-controlled heroes! Cameos galore! Longshot's abilities go haywire when he runs into cosmic entity, The In-Betweener, and a corrupt cosmic cube. He gets thrown into another reality where the Chaos and Order sides of  The In-Betweener are split and everything is wonky. Order is running SHIELD's magic-policing division and Chaos is trapped by his twin. Brother. Otherself. Guy. In order to restore reality, bring the two halves of the In-Between together, Longshot has to save the cosmic cube (in the form of a demon trapped in a teddy bear named Mr. Dapples) from the Order half while dodging the rampant des...

SPOILERS: Review: Supergirl #25

Image
Supergirl #26 Writer: Tony Bedard Artist: Yildiray Cinar Happy Mid-Week Mini Christmas, Geeks and a Geekettes! This week we'll be doing Supergirl #26, Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe #4, and Buzzkill #4.  While not a hardcore Supergirl reader, it is a book I've picked up occasionally and have kept up with the story. But this issue is a little different. This issue, we have fan-titled "Nu" Lobo. But whom DC calls "real" Lobo.  I'm really excited about this character and what it means for Lobo, Nu or otherwise. This issue picks up where Lobo #0 during Villains month leaves off. "Real" Lobo, svelte Lobo, thin Lobo, not-the-main-man Lobo, is in search of The Man Main Lobo, who is apparently an impostor. Small Lobo picks up some intel on where The Main Man might be hiding, but it was old news; The Main Man is hold up on Earth, and only one woman will know for sure where to find him. That one woman just so happens to...

SPOILERS: Review: Justice League 3000 #1 - Lyesmith

Image
Writers: Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis Artist: Howard Porter Happy Mid-Week Mini-Christmas, everybody! Today we'll be reviewing Justice League 3000 #1. This comic has been hinted at and advertised here and there for weeks. We've seen this gimmick before with the DC 1-Million line, amongst others. A futuristic twist on the Justice League meant to boost sales and maybe make a few collectibles out of the new and different costumes. I'll admit it, I bought a few of the 1-Million issues that tied in with the current comics I was collecting at the time. And while the vast majority of those comics were iffy at best (Don't get me started on Kyle Rayner's story line. Grrroooaaaaan. More "Kyle is soooo special!") there were issues, or more appropriately, parts of issues, that were at least amusing. Robin The Toy Wonder , android version of Batman's side kick was pretty funny. I read the hell out of the Young Justice 1 Million. But I digress. ...

SPOILERS: Review: Voice in the Dark #1 @TopCow

Image
Voice in the Dark #1 By  Larime Taylor www.facebook.com/larime.taylor @TopCow                            As a big fan of Top Cow and their crew, I've been seeing this comic advertised for weeks now. I'm not sure what I was expecting out of this comic, but I ended up pleasantly surprised. If I had to liken it to other piece of work, I think I would say it's a little Dexter and a little A Scanner Darkly . Now I say A Scanner Darkly to use as an example in tone. I could easily see this in the same format, kind of a moving graphic novel movie, but that's still not where it compares for me. How can I put this... most times when I read comics, there's a background noise. Kind of like a soundtrack. A constant buzz of sound. What Taylor did here was give us a story where the only background noise was the main character's narration.                ...

Review: Harley Quinn #0

Image
Harley Quinn #0 Writers: Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti                                           Artist: Charlie Adlard, Art Baltazar, Becky Cloonan, Darwyn Cooke, Tony S. Daniel, Sam Kieth, Bruce Timm, Jim Lee, Stephane Roux, Tradd Moore, Chad Hardin, Adam Hughes, Dave Johnson, Dan Panosian, Jeremy Roberts, and Walter Simonson INSANELY WACKY! This is probably one the best ways to introduce a new book with a character this crazy. Each artist gets at least a page and it was wonderfully done. Harley talks with the writers about her book, who should draw it, the tone and subject matter.  There's not a whole lot to say about the story, because there really isn't one, except that you some awesome art from some of the most talented artists around, and a couple of cameos to boot. If you're a Harley Quinn fan, I think this comic is for you. Very fu...

Why I Love Loki And Hate His Fans - Lyesmith

Image
Loki is the epitome of duality. He's creator AND destroyer. He's a father AND a mother. He's male AND female. He's good AND evil. To the core. While Loki is definitely modeled after humanity, he can never be held to human rules and logistics. He's a god. He's an idea. An archtype. While he has human characteristic, he also has ALL human characteristics. He's much more than any one person could ever actually be. He fathered and gave birth. He had children he loved and cared about. He also cheated on his wife. Stole. Lied. Played cruel and merciless tricks on people. He cut off all of Sif's hair; her prized possession, because he thought it would be funny. Sure, he took one for the team, and turned into a mare to lead away a workhorse of a giant, to keep that giant from winning a bargain Loki struck with him. So, again, cheating and lying, to get out of a mess HE created. And someone suggested he was raped by the horse. I see no evidence anywhere ...

SPOILERS: Review: Injustice Annual #1/Constantine #8

Image
Hey, Geek and Geekettes! It's time for the DC side of Mid-Week Mini-Christmas, also known as Comic Book Wednesday! Let's dive into those reviews! Constantine #8 Writer: Ray Fawkes Artist: ACO This ending of this book irritated by crap out of me. But we'll get to that. I love the storyline they've got going for Constantine, and I wish they'd leave it kind of separate, on the side, not really tie in the direct story to anything else. The artwork isn't my favorite this issue, but I think it fits with the story, so it works. The story picks up where the last one left off, which is the way I like it. Constantine fighting with Mr. E while Sargon looks on, unable to stop Mr. E, but neither is she willing to help Constantine - at least not directly. She leaves a sword called the Moonblade where Constantine can get to it, giving him the edge he needs to defeat Mr. E. Drained (and I bet, unable to see a way out out of his current situation without a confrontation, and als...

SPOILERS: Review: All-New X-Men #18/Thor God of Thunder #15

Image
Hello, geeks and geekettes! It's that time again! Mid-Week Mini Christmas, also known as Comic Book Wednesday! This week we're doing All-New X-Men #18 and Thor God of Thunder #15 on the Marvel side. Speaking of Thor, check the facebook page at facebook.com/geekinpodcast for our first issue of the Geekin' Podcast and Retinax5's and I's review of Thor: The Dark World! Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Stuart Immonen I must be a bigger Bendis fan than I thought. I notoriously love Guardians of the Galaxy, and I'm just as much in love with this book. I thought the art worked very well for the story, and the over-all book was exactly what I want from my X-Men books. This book addressed things that I'd been wondering about for several issues now - the Jean/Hank kiss. The fact that Magick and Kitty used to be so close. The future of the young original X-Men. The original X-Men are trapped in our time - they can't go back. At all. People have tried. Something...

SPOILERS: Review: Amazing X-Men #1/Longshot Saves the Marvel U #1

Image
Amazing X-Men #1 - The Quest for Nightcrawler Writer: Jason Aaron Artist: Ed McGuinness Nightcrawler has always been one of my favorite characters since I was a child. I was saddened when he died, but anyone who's ever read more than 6 issues of X-Men, we knew he'd be back eventually. And Amazing X-Men #1 is where that happens. Nightcrawler is in Heaven, but it's just short of paradise for Kurt. He was a flirtatious swashbuckler, a man of faith and belief, and now he sits in Heaven twiddling his thumbs. He's not ready for eternal rest. He has more to do, so he feels. What he really feels, is bored. Until Dad shows up for a visit. One of Marvel's most interesting and underused villains, Azazel, attacks Heaven. Meanwhile, on the mortal coil, Angelica Jones, Firestar, shows up at the Jean Grey School as their new teacher. Nervous, anxious, and unsure of what to expect, Angelica's met with the usual chaos and disorder that follows Wolverine's X-Men where ever th...

SPOILERS: Review: Stormwatch25/Phantom Stranger13

Image
Hey there, Geeks and Geekettes! Welcome to another Comic Book Wednesday which means, of course, comic reviews! We'll start the week off with DC Comics Phantom Stranger #13 and Stormwatch #25. Writer: J.M. DeMatteis Artist: Fernando Blanco Phantom Stranger is a part of the more "magic centered" side of DC Comics, along with Justice League Dark, it has more of a Vertigo feel to it, but this time around, with the New 52 reboot, they're grounding this side of the DCU in more connection with everything else. It doesn't feel so disconnected as it did before. Phantom Stranger is a fun and... strange comic. It has heavy religious tones, as we're lead to believe that the Phantom Stranger used to be Judas, the very same who betrayed Christ and is now kept alive to do God's bidding in some undefined penance. This issue we find the Stranger in the house he's used for his alter ego and mortal guide, Philip Stark. Philip Stark was a real man - a serial killer, whom ...
