Weird West Week - Video Games - Music - Shoutouts - THE END!
Hey Geeks and Geekettes! Welcome to the last day of Weird West Week! (cue the sad "awwwww"s)
Today we'll be covering video games, music, and awesome groups all Weird West themed! Let's git 'er duuuuuuuun! (Sorry, I got caught up in the moment. Larry The Cable guy, please don't sue me.)
Borderlands
Borderlands 2
Platform: PS3/XBox/PC
I'm lumping these two together, but I highly suggest you play both; though they're entirely playable as separate games.
If BraveStarr and Mad Max had a love child, that love child had a comic book based on him, and then the comic book came to life and started using steroids, it would be Borderlands. This is an amazing, over-the-top, crazy-fun FPS. NOT CHILD APPROPRIATE. Lots of blood. Lots of gore. Lots of vulgar humor and sexual innuendos. Both games are must-haves. The first one introduces you to the world of Pandora, where you play a Vault Hunter, looking for the mythic Vault supposedly full of treasure. Then Borderlands 2 sets you in the near future from where your character leaves off. The previous player characters from Borderlands are now big-time quest givers in Borderlands 2. Packed full of pop-culture references and jokes, this futuristic Weird West video game is playable again and again and again.
Starhawk
PS3
In the distant future, humans are colonizing on other planets across the galaxy. At the same time, humans are mining a valuable energy source called Rift Energy. The rift energy miners, known as Rifters, began mining the Rift Energy from the planets of the Outer Spur. Some of the Rifters were exposed to the Rift Energy, which transformed them into savage-like mutants known as Outcasts. The Outcasts, protective of the Rift Energy, attacked Rifter mining sites, including an outpost on the broken planet of Sever, owned by brothers Emmett and Logan Graves. An Outcast war party destroyed their rig, and both brothers became exposed to Rift Energy. Logan, unfortunately, mutated into an Outcast, but Emmett was able to remain human thanks to his friend Sydney Cutter, who created a regulator to implant into Emmett’s spine to keep him from transforming into an Outcast. Emmett and Cutter soon become hired gunslingers who travel from planet to planet to protect the Rifter mining sites from Outcast war bands.
Darkwatch
Platform: PS2/XBox
The game's story follows the exploits of a wanted outlaw named Jericho Cross and his employment in an ancient vampire-hunting order known as the Darkwatch. After unwittingly releasing the Darkwatch's greatest enemy, a vampire lord named Lazarus Malkoth, Jericho is conscripted into the Darkwatch as an elite operative. Jericho, however, is slowly turning into a vampire himself, as a result of being bitten by Lazarus. The game outlines either Jericho's struggle for humanity or his descent into darkness, depending on the player's actions.
The game begins in the Arizona Territory in 1876 with Jericho attempting to rob a Darkwatch train that is transporting the captured Lazarus Malkoth to the Darkwatch Citadel, a frequently mentioned and often visited location in the game. His actions inadvertently release Lazarus into the West. In a seeming bit of mercy, Lazarus bites Jericho and gives him the curse of the vampire, causing him to slowly turn into one. The game continues with the introduction of Darkwatch agent Cassidy Sharp as well as the appearance of Shadow, Jericho's undead horse whom he fed on and turned in a frenzy after being bitten by Lazarus.
The game released in 2005 and is for the PS2 and XBox, so if you're able to find a copy, and still have either one of these platforms - count yourself lucky!

Warm Gun
Price: $0.99
iTunes Ratings: 4 Stars
World War III has been fought to the tipping point and ecologists long unheeded cries have been silenced by the grim truth of their predictions. To the last drop of oil have the worlds resources been depleted, and only sporadic traces of modern structure can be sifted in the dust. Time ticks forward, but humans must retrace their advancement back; through a history that has already been lived and to the Wild West for the second time. We have trampled ahead to the past in muddy boots, to the United States of late 19th century.
This spun western lets you take control of 4 original characters; choose from weapons new and strange and a wider range of modern contraptions with primitive power. Classic and innovative, undoubtedly original, every FPS player will find satisfaction with Warm Gun.
Below we've got links to two "western themed" bands.
Big Damn Heroes is an alternative country band that takes their name from fan-favorite TV-turned-Movie, Firefly, giving us a mix of country, rock, and blues, that makes for some damn fine Weird West Worthy tunes.
GhoulTown is a horrorpunk/gothabilly band from Texas unlike anything we at Geekin' have ever seen before. Amazing storytellers and musicians, these guys are sure to enthrall fans of Deadlands and the darker side of the Weird West.
Be sure to check out both bands and give them some love!
