SPOILERS: Review: Hinterkind #3 - Follow-Up

Hey, Geeks and Geekettes, it's that time again, Comic Book Wednesday, or better known as MID-WEEK MINI CHRISTMAS-Mas-mas-mas....

A few weeks ago I did a review for Vertigo's Hinterkind #1 (you remember that, don't ya?) so now that we've hit issue 3, I thought it'd be nice to do a follow up and see how the series is coming along.

Writer: Ian Edginton
Artist: Francesco Trifogli

It is probably wildly unfair, but still yet, it's hard not to compare this series to Image's Saga. While the style of artwork has some similarities, and the over all tone of the story is likewise similar in places, the two books are still very different. So I'm going to do my best to judge this book as this book, and not compare it to Saga.

Now keep in mind, we're only on issue 3, the story is just starting to build, but by issue 3 we know more about the world at large than we did in the first issue. As we find out more about in this issue, the myths and fables we grew up with are real - Elves, Goblins, Ogres, etc - and as Humankind grew strong and fast, most of the myths retreated into the forests and caves to hide, instead of confronting us. Once humanity did discover they weren't alone in the world, we lashed out, persecuting and flat out killing them.

After some sort of catastrophe called "The Blight" leaves humanity in ruins and levels the playing field for the myths and humanity, the myths are now hunting humans, some for eating, but mostly for selling - the "Queen" is rounding up humans on the west coast.

This issue introduces a third group, a bit more technologically advanced, they captures some of the humans our story has been following, and puts them in cells, incinerating those they claim they can't "use". As the third issue ends, we're not sure who this new group is or what they're after just yet, but it does open up a whole new faction to explore that might be just as fatal to the humans AND the myths as the myths are to the humans.

Here's where I break my promise and compare the two books.

Lacking the sci-fi aspect that Saga has and focusing more on the fantasy aspect, this book holds it own against it's Image counterpart. Interesting, lively, and very well put together so far; though I do wish the pacing was just a bit quicker. Maybe that's just my short attention span, and partly to do with the fact that I'm eager to learn more about this world, but I feel like we should be further along than what we are. But I'm definitely enjoying the series so far and look forward to updating you all again after a few more issue. I think we'll have a longer stretch between issues next time.

I give Hinterkind a 3.5 out of 5 mutilated elf ears.

As always, leave us a comment below and let us know what YOU think of Hinterkind so far, or shoot us a message on Facebook and Twitter.
